No, in theory 5w30 and 5w40 will g ive you similar performance cold...hence 5 is the same. The 5w40 will be thicker when warm.

The main reason I use 5w-40 is because I don't have to pay for the oil change kits. If I had to pay, I'd use Castrol 5w-30 A3/B4 or 0w-40.
